Welcome to Payne Lake Provincial Recreation Area!

This lakeside campground is 25 km west of Cardston on Hwy. 5 (18 km east of Waterton Lakes National Park on Hwy. 5). Choose from scenic lakeview sites or the shade and privacy of natural mixed forest. Fish for trout, hike, sail, canoe, or enjoy the views of the mountains while relaxing in your campsite.

During the summer months, Camping Loop A and part of Camping Loop B is fully reservable. These sites are un-serviced but all located a close walk to the lake. Close to the Lake there are many trails which range from easy to challenging for hiking, and mountain biking.

During the fall and winter months, a section of the campground remains open offering First-come, first-served camping.

Firewood
  • Firewood is sold during peak season, Alberta Parks Staff come through the park to sell firewood.
  • Firewood is not available during winter months.
  • Help stop the spread of forest pests, Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer.  Plan to buy firewood locally, burn on site, never bring home.
Water
  • You are expected to bring your own water.
  • Government of Alberta regulations require that water from pumps/taps like the one located here NOT be used for drinking, cooking or washing (including brushing teeth and washing dishes).
  • Water from the pump/tap onsite can only be used for purposes like putting out a campfire.
