Bear Necessities

Whether you're new to the trails or a seasoned hiker, knowing how to stay safe in bear country is a must. Join an Alberta Parks Interpreter on a guided walk through bear habitat to explore the world of Alberta’s bears, their behaviour, and what to do when you see one in the wild. Learn how to hike "Bear Smart", prevent negative encounters, and get hands-on practice with inert bear spray. Discover how a little knowledge and a lot of respect goes a long way in keeping people and bears safe.

This program requires participants to walk up to 4 kilometers on easy, but uneven terrain with minimal elevation gain. Appropriate footwear is advised.

Please note:

  • All ages welcome.
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Please be dressed for the weather and insects.
  • No alcohol or smoking permitted during programs.
